1) Reti di Emergenza/Emergency Networks: Public Protection and Disaster Recovery (hybrid, interoperabile and secure networks)


- The European FP7 Large Scale Integrated Project E-SPONDER "A holistic approach towards the development of the first responder of the future" (FP7 242411): July 2010 - December 2014

The E-SPONDER is a suite of real-time data-centric technologies which will provide actionable information and communication support to first responders that act during abnormal events (crises) occurring in critical infrastructures. This information will enable improved control and management, resulting in real time synchronization between forces on the ground (police, rescue, firefighters) and out-of-theater command and control centers.

- The European FP7 Project PPDR-TC "Public Protection and Disaster Relief – Transformation Center" (FP7 313015): April 2013 - September 2015

The primary aim of the proposed Public Protection and Disaster Relief Transformation Centre (PPDR-TC) is to define a roadmap of novel approaches to achieve interoperable, secure and resilient communication architectures tailored specifically for the future needs of the PPDR community. PPDR-TC will enable all disaster relief agencies to provide an integrated response to both mission critical and non-mission critical situations. PPDR-TC will also explore novel possibilities (for example, the use of unmanned aerial vehicle and cognitive radio) to achieve ubiquitous secure communications over hybrid infrastructures (i.e. air-to-ground and/or satellite and/or terrestrial, commercial and/or public, new and/or existing, narrowband and/or broadband, dedicated and/or leased).

- Hybrid Optical Switching and Power Consumption in Optical Networks

New applications and services are driving the demand for new high-speed transmission technologies. Wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) is able to provide the required capacity by dividing the available bandwidth into different wavelength channels, each able to support up to 100 Gbps. Several switching paradigms have been proposed for WDM networks: optical circuit switching (OCS), optical burst switching (OBS) and optical packet switching (OPS). OCS is well suited for large and stable traffic flows but it is highly inefficient in presence of bursty sources. OBS perform efficiently both in case of constant and bursty sources, but introduces high losses at the core nodes. Finally, OPS provides high bandwidth utilization but requires a large optical buffering capacity at the core nodes which is very difficult to provide. In order to combine the advantages of all the three proposed technologies, a hybrid optical switching (HOS) approach has been recently proposed. In a HOS network, large flows are transmitted using circuits or long bursts while small flows are transmitted using packets or short bursts.
