within European Conference on Networks and Communications (EuCNC 2015) sponsored by the European Commission

General Final Programme available here

current RESEARCH Activities - Open positions available for candidates to Ph.D

TOPIC: Security Professional Communications (SPC) System

Netlab Research Group will investigate the evolutions of 4G/LTE for SPC systems. Then it will focus on 5G technologies and, in particular, on SDN (Software-Defined Networking), a current trend in networking theory that is rooted in decoupling the transmission policies definition (i.e. control plane) from the transmissions actual execution (i.e. forwarding plane), to introduce software programmability for the former. The advantages of using SDN to realize such a network resource pooling are:

(i) The pool of resources can transparently operate behind the scenes.

(ii) No ad-hoc network protocol or complex distributed algorithm is required.

(iii) Different dispatching disciplines can be programmed via software, and they can react in real-time to network changes.

Also, we will focus on potential threats to LTE networks for SPC systems and will investigate, classify possible future threats in next 5G networks. Then we will develop the emulation environment that will employ the Mininet network emulator (especially pertinent for 5G technology and SDN) running on a native Ubuntu Linux installation (i.e. not on a virtual machine) where emulated OpenFlow-compatible switches using OpenvSwitch will be created and Floodlight will be used to write the controller.

Therefore, Open positions are available for candidates to Ph.D. at The International Doctorate School in Information and Communication Technologies (ICT)

Available Research Topics:

1) Performance analysis of SDN controllers

  • Activities plan:

- setup of several SDN controllers on PCs in the Lab (programming langauges python, java, C++, ...);

- setup of a benchmarking tool (e.g. cbench) and definition of metrics;

- performance evaluation.

2) Programming of an Application Aware SDN data-plane

  • Activities plan:

- study of the language P4;

- study of the simulation tool Mininet;

- implemenation of a virtual switch P4-compatible for packet analysis;

- definition of policies for traffic management.

3) Advanced Traffic Management System - Intelligent Transportation System

- Vehicular traffic analysis;

- real time traffic (from video cameras, sensors, ...) analysis;

- safety

- V2X communications
