{{PD Help Page}}

Tables may be authored in wiki pages using either HTML table elements directly, or using wikicode formating to define the table. HTML table elements and their use are well described on various web pages and will not be discussed here. The benefit of wikicode is that the table is constructed of character symbols which tend to make it easier to perceive the table structure in the article editing view compared to HTML table elements.

A good general rule of thumb is to avoid using a table unless you need to. Table markup often complicates page editing.

== Wiki table markup summary ==

{|cellpadding="5" cellspacing="0" border="1"
|<nowiki>{|</nowiki> || start '''table'''
|-
|<nowiki>|+</nowiki> || table '''caption,''' ''optional;'' only one per table and between table start and first row
|-
|<nowiki>|-</nowiki> || '''table row,''' ''optional on first row'' -- wiki engine assumes the first row
|-
|<nowiki>!</nowiki> || '''table header''' cell, ''optional.'' Consecutive table headers may be added on same line separated by double marks (!!) or start on new lines, each with its own single mark (!).
|-
|<nowiki>|</nowiki> || '''table data''' cell, ''required!'' Consecutive table data cells may be added on same line separated by double marks (<nowiki>||</nowiki>) or start on new lines, each with its own single mark (<nowiki>|</nowiki>).
|-
|<nowiki>|}</nowiki> || end '''table'''
|}
*The above marks must '''start on a new line''' except the double || and !! for optionally adding consecutive cells to a line.
*'''XHTML attributes.''' Each mark, except table end, optionally accepts one or more XHTML attributes. Attributes must be on the same line as the mark. Separate attributes from each other with a single space.
**Cells and caption (<nowiki>| or ||, ! or !!, and |+</nowiki>) hold content. So separate any attributes from content with a single pipe (|). Cell content may follow on same line or on following lines.
**Table and row marks (<nowiki>{| and |-</nowiki>) do not directly hold content. Do ''not'' add pipe (|) after their optional attributes. If you erroneously add a pipe after attributes for the table mark or row mark the parser will delete it ''and'' your final attribute if it was touching the erroneous pipe!
*'''Content''' may (a) follow its cell mark on the same line after any optional XHTML attributes or (b) on lines below the cell mark. Content that uses wiki markup that itself needs to start on a new line, such as lists, headers, or nested tables, must of course be on its own new line.

==Simple table==

===Plain===
The following table lacks borders and good spacing but shows the simplest wiki markup table structure
{| width="100%"
|width="50%"|
{|
|Orange
|Apple
|-
|Bread
|Pie
|-
|Butter
|Ice cream
|}
|width="50%"|

{|
|Orange
|Apple
|-
|Bread
|Pie
|-
|Butter
|Ice cream
|}

|}
===Alternative===
For more table-ish looking wiki markup cells can be listed on one line separated by ||. This does not scale well for longer cell content such as paragraphs. It works well for short bits of content however, such as our example table.

Extra spaces within cells in the wiki markup can be added, as I have done in the wiki markup below, to make the wiki markup itself look better but they do not effect the actual table rendering.

HTML attributes can be added to this table following the examples in other tables on this page but have been left out of the following example for simplicity.
{| width="100%"
|width="50%"|
{|
| Orange || Apple || more
|-
| Bread || Pie || more
|-
| Butter || Ice cream || and more
|}
|width="50%"|

{|
| Orange || Apple || more
|-
| Bread || Pie || more
|-
| Butter || Ice cream || and more
|}

|}

===With HTML attributes===
You can add HTML attributes to make your table look better
====border="1"====
{| width="100%"
|width="50%"|
{| border="1"
|Orange
|}
|width="50%"|

{| border="1"
|Orange
|Apple
|-
|Bread
|Pie
|-
|}

|}
====align="center" border="1"====
{| width="100%"
|width="50%"|
{| align="center" border="1"

====align="right" border="1"====
You can put attributes on individual '''cells.''' Numbers for example may look better aligned right

==Table with H1, H2, H3 etc. headings==

HTML H1, H2, H3, H4 etc. headings can be created the standard wiki markup way with ==equal== signs and '''must be on a line all by themselves''' to work.

'''Preview the whole table.''' If you click on an edit tab for a heading ''within'' a table, edit, and preview, the parent table will display erroneously broken because part of it will be missing.

Keep the heading hierarchy consistant with the rest of the page so that the table of contents at page top works correctly.

{{H:h|Reader toc}}
Every page has a link labelled "'''What links here'''" (or, more generally, labelled with the text in [[mediawiki:whatlinkshere]]), also called '''backlink'''.
==Overview==

The pages linking to and/or embedding the given page are listed. This info comes from the [[pagelinks table]] and the [[templatelinks table]]. The pages embedding the given page are marked with "inclusion"; for these pages it is not shown whether they also ''link'' to the given page. This can be seen with [[query#backlinks]].

The '''What links here''' facility can be used to see which other articles contain links to one you are interested in. To see this information, choose the ''what links here'' link while looking at any page. A list of articles which links to the specified page are displayed chronologically, from old at the top to most recently linked at the bottom.

The list of links to an article is useful in a number of ways:

* It gives a very rough indication of how popular a page is. Pages with many links are likely to be viewed often and should therefore be of the very best quality. Pages with few or no links may not be very popular.
* Where the subject material of an article is unclear, the list of articles linking to it might provide useful context. For instance when presented with a stub about ''John Smith'' that gives only his date of birth and death, viewing the list of links to the article might reveal that he won a gold medal in the Olympics.
* Facilitates proper [[w:en:Wikipedia:Disambiguation|disambiguation]].

This facility works also for a page that does not exist (there may be links to it, which makes it extra useful to create it). The ''What links here'' button is also on the edit page on which one arrives when following a broken link.

To invoke a ''what links here'' list directly, use e.g.
<nowiki>[[w:Special:Whatlinkshere/John Smith]]</nowiki>
resulting in [[w:Special:Whatlinkshere/John_Smith]].

==Limitation==
Not listed are [[Help:Link#Subpage_feature|subpages]] that just have an ''automatic'' link to a page.

==Redirects==
The backlinks feature shows which backlinks are redirects.

The backlinks of the redirect are also shown, and if they include a redirect, the backlinks of that also (not more).

This makes it a useful tool for finding double redirects, which do not work, and, except in special applications (see below) can better be replaced by redirects to the final target.

==Cases of inclusion==
Whether there is a link from A to C is relevant for backlinks as well as Related changes. If C does not exist, only backlinks are applicable.

*Inclusion is listed as such.
*A link from A to C counts as such even if the link is not explicit in the wikitext of A, but due to the inclusion of B, which links to C.
*If A calls B and there is a link in B to C within noinclude tags then B links to C, but A does not.
*If A calls B and there is a link in B to C within includeonly tags then A links to C, but B does not.
*If A calls B and B links to a page C that depends on a variable or parameter, then:
**The question whether A links to C depends on the value of the variable on page A, or the parameter with which A calls B.
**The question whether B links to C depends on the value of the variable on page B; in the case of a parameter, considered from page B, the page may e.g. not call a valid page name (because it calls one with a name with braces), so B does not link to any valid C, or a name depending on the default value of the parameter.

Thus a link from A to C may be due to the inclusion of B, even when B, considered by itself, does not link to C. Thus, to find out what templates cause pages to link to C, it is not sufficient to check for templates in the backlinks of C.

If some pages link to C due to the inclusion of B, it is more convenient if B is in the list of backlinks of C. One can assure this by putting an appropriate example of usage of B on page B, inside noinclude tags (B includes B, but without recursion).

Otherwise a page like B, which causes pages which include B to link to C, can only be found by looking for pages which directly or indirectly are included in these backlink pages of C.

Examples:
*[[Template:H:f]] calls Template:h:f <nowiki>{{</nowiki>NAMESPACE}}. Considered by itself that is the unused Template:H:f Template [http://meta.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Recentchangeslinked&target=Template:H:f&days=3000&limit=50], [http://meta.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Whatlinkshere&target=Template%3AH%3Af_Template]
*This page '''Help:What links here''' links through [[Template:H:f]] to [[Template:H:f Help]] [http://meta.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Recentchangeslinked&target=Help:What%20links%20here&days=3000&limit=500], [http://meta.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Whatlinkshere&target=Template%3AH%3Af_Help]. This page is therefore a backlink of the latter, but Template:H:f is not listed.

Even without a template name depending on a variable or parameter, if page A links to page C due to the inclusion of template B1 which redirects to B2, which links to C, A is in the list of backlinks of C but B1 is not.

Summarizing, for the purpose of backlinks and Related changes, A links to C if there is, in that order, a chain of template calls, a single redirect, template calls, a single redirect, etc., template calls, and a chain of redirects.

If a page is conditionally embedded through #if, #ifeq, #ifexist, #ifexpr, or #switch, it is counted as embedded, even if the condition is not fulfilled

If on page A the name of an embedded page is time-dependent, e.g. <nowiki>{{abc{{CURRENTDOW}}}}</nowiki>, currently giving {{abc{{CURRENTDOW}}}}, the "What links here" list of one of the possibly embedded pages shows page A: the current one, or, depending on caching issues, perhaps an older one.

Thus, although the same functionality is obtained with <nowiki>{{#switch:{{CURRENTDOW}}|0={{abc0}}|1={{abc1}}|..}}</nowiki>, these methods differ in whether the seven templates all count as embedded, or just one.

In the case of an image, using it in a page is listed in the third section of the image description page, but not in "What links here" of that page

==Order; query==
Comparison with [[Query#backlinks]] and [[Query#embeddedin]]:

Compare [[Special:Whatlinkshere/Template:T]] with
http://meta.wikimedia.org/w/query.php?what=backlinks|embeddedin&titles=template:t&bllimit=500&eilimit=500&blfilter=all&eifilter=all

Differences demonstrated:
*Query sorts by function first (backlinks and inclusions), then by [[page id]], "what links here" sorts by page id.
*Query distinguishes between B being only included in A, and B also being linked from A.
*Query does not indicate which backlinks are redirects, and does not include ''their'' backlinks.
*Query provides page ids.

Another difference:
*Query allows restriction to a specified namespace.

==In-page list of backlinks==
With the extension [[Semantic MediaWiki]] (SMW) links are categorized by specifying relations. For a given relation the backlinks of a page can be produced in-page. A series of queries, one for each relation (which seems cumbersome but can be put in a template like [http://wiki.ontoworld.org/wiki/Template:Ask]), provides an in-page list of backlinks sorted by relation. Moreover, forward links and attributes of the resulting pages can also be provided, and also backlinks of backlinks.
A '''variable''' can be considered a [[Help:Template#Predefined_templates|predefined template]].

This is a list of '''variables''' that can be used in the wikitext. The way they are rendered vary with time (directly depending on time, or e.g. for number of articles, depending on the creation of other articles), on the project (it changes when the wikitext is copied), or on the page in which it occurs (it changes when the wikitext is copied, when the page is renamed, and when the page is included in another page).

On the left is the variable, on the right how it is rendered at this time, in this project, on this page.

The names of the variables form part of the set of so-called "[[Help:Magic words|magic words]]" the system uses.

==Constants depending on parameters==

The parser function localurl: replaces spaces by underscores and special characters by escape codes, e.g. {{localurl:a !}} gives {{localurl:a !}}. The main purpose was
to create a link to a given page in external link style in the same project or a project which uses the same string in the URL between the server name and the page name. This function is
now better served by less verbose fullurl: constructs,
<nowiki>{{fullurl:page}}</nowiki>
is a shorthand for
<nowiki>{{SERVER}}{{localurl:page}}</nowiki>
.

Both fullurle: and localurle: performed additional character escaping on the resulting link, but no example is known where that still has any additional effect.

Note that fullurl: and localurl: don't encode special characters and spaces in the optional ''query-string'' parameter. At least for spaces this will result in broken URLs:

<nowiki>{{fullurl:m:Special:Contributions|target=Jimbo Wales&limit=10}}</nowiki>

{{fullurl:m:Special:Contributions|target=Jimbo Wales&limit=10}}

With <nowiki>target={{urlencode:Jimbo Wales}}&limit=10</nowiki> as ''query-string'' it works:

{{fullurl:m:Special:Contributions|target={{urlencode:Jimbo Wales}}&limit=10}}

The new urlencode: encodes spaces as "'''+'''", not "'''_'''" or the generally supported "'''%20'''", this might have interesting effects, take care. Trailing spaces are stripped, leading spaces respected:
<nowiki>{{urlencode: @ ! }}</nowiki> yields '''{{urlencode: @ ! }}'''.

For obvious reasons encoding "'''}}'''" or "'''|'''" cannot work directly. Don't encode "'''='''", "'''&'''", or "''';'''" in structured ''query-strings'' unless you really want it.

===Example===
Say you want to create a link in a template to the block log for blocked usernames -> "''<nowiki>{{fullurl:Special:Log/block|user=User:{{{1}}} }}</nowiki>''". This won't work with spaces in the name like "Willy on Wheels" (unless they are manually underlined) as you'd get: "''{{fullurl:Special:Log/block|user=User:Willy on Wheels}}''", so what you can do is escape it with: "''<nowiki>{{fullurl:Special:Log/block|user=User:{{urlencode:{{{1}}}}} }}</nowiki>''", giving you "''{{fullurl:Special:Log/block|user=User:{{urlencode:Willy on Wheels}}}}''"

Also, the magic words for page name like ''<nowiki>{{PAGENAME}} {{FULLPAGENAME}}</nowiki> etc'' all have 'escaped' versions: ''<nowiki>{{PAGENAMEE}} {{FULLPAGENAMEE}}</nowiki> etc''.

For the rendering on page A, these variables depend on page A, even if page A contains the variable due to [[help:template|inclusion]] of page B. Variables in the [[Help:Category#Sort_key|sort key]] of a category tag refer to the page with the tag, not the category page where it takes effect.

<nowiki>{{NAMESPACE}}</nowiki> and <nowiki>{{NAMESPACEE}}</nowiki> return an empty string in the article namespace <nowiki>{{ns:0}}</nowiki>,
see above and [[Help:Parser function#NS:0|NS:0]].

PAGENAMEE displays the page title in the form that is used in URLs, i.e. with underscores for spaces, and percent-encoding for special characters, and is therefore used for constructing URLs incl. ''query strings''.

For example, on [[m:Template talk:!|Template talk:!]], SUBJECTPAGENAMEE would produce Template:%21.
Don't encode PAGENAMEE etc. again, i.e. don't use it in the first parameter of '''fullurl:''' and similar parser functions,
<nowiki>{{urlencode:%21}}</nowiki> = {{urlencode:%21}} probably won't work as expected. ''Query strings'' in [[purlnet:|PURL]] redirections are an exception.

The "EE" encoding examples shown above for this page are not very interesting, only TALKPAGENAMEE and TALKSPACEE differ from TALKPAGENAME and TALKSPACE.
See [[Help:Link]] and [[Help:Magic words]] for other examples.

In a subpage, <nowiki>[[../]]</nowiki> renders as a link to the parent page. For example, on [[m:Link/a/b]] it gives an internal link to [[m:Link/a]], see [[Help:Link#Subpage feature]].

{{evaldemo|REVISIONID|s==}} showing the '''current''' unique revision number of a saved page as used for [[Help:diff|diff]]s in the [[Help:page history|page history]] is in essence [[mediazilla:6181|useless]], it can't be substituted and also doesn't work in preview.
Time variables which change more often than once a day are generally useful only as curiosities. Because of the way article HTML is cached, these variables may be wrong by up to 24 hours, and so are not a reliable way to tell the user the current time.

Please note that a template using more than one CURRENT variable directly or indirectly is suspicious. There can be critical races near hh:mm:'''59'''.
The following code to determine the minute can produce spurious results if the timestamp changes during the evaluation:
<nowiki>{{#expr:(( {{CURRENTTIMESTAMP}}-{{CURRENTTIMESTAMP}} mod 100)/100) mod 100}}</nowiki> = {{#expr: (( {{CURRENTTIMESTAMP}} - {{CURRENTTIMESTAMP}} mod 100)/100) mod 100}}

''This is actually an intermittent bug with MOD depending on the size (not the value) of CURRENTTIMESTAMP, see'' {{tim|CURRENTMINUTE}}.

;CURRENTDOW :0=Sunday, 1=Monday, .. 6=Saturday.
;CURRENTWEEK :is the number of the current week (1-53) according to [[w:ISO 8601|ISO 8601]] with no leading zero.
;CURRENTDAY2 :adds a leading zero to days 1...9, this allows to construct the ISO date formats like {{CURRENTYEAR}}-{{CURRENTMONTH}}-{{CURRENTDAY2}}'''T'''{{CURRENTTIME}}'''Z'''.
;CURRENTMONTHNAMEGEN :is the genitive grammatical form of the month name (used in Finnish {{unclear}} and in Slovenian).
;NUMBEROFARTICLES :see [[Help:Article count]] and [[Special:Statistics]]..

===Substitution===

:''Main article: '''[[Help:Substitution]]'''''

When
<nowiki>{{<includeonly>subst:</includeonly>CURRENTTIMESTAMP}}</nowiki>
is included and thereby substituted, the timestamp of doing that is put in the wikitext, and similarly for other variables. Examples:

;
<nowiki>{{CURRENTTIMESTAMP}}</nowiki>

:{{CURRENTTIMESTAMP}} - stays a variable on pages including the template
;
<nowiki>{{subst:CURRENTTIMESTAMP}}</nowiki>

:20060526024210 - became a substituted constant in the template
;
<nowiki>{{<includeonly>subst:</includeonly>CURRENTTIMESTAMP}}</nowiki>

:{{<includeonly>subst:</includeonly>CURRENTTIMESTAMP}} - becomes a constant at the time of its inclusion

=== New NUMBEROF syntax ===

The "old" (for some weeks) syntax was {{ NUMBEROF''item'''''|'''R }} to get the "raw" number without fancy comma separators.
The new syntax is {{ NUMBEROF''item''''':'''R }} with a colon to get the "raw" number of whatever. This also affects the new
magic words PAGESINNS and PAGESINNAMESPACE, now disabled by default.

;Using the old format will (try to) include a corresponding template. Because the "old" feature is in fact rather new it might be possible to fix the syntax using [[Help:What links here|What links here]]:
:NUMBEROF [[Special:Whatlinkshere/Template:NUMBEROFADMINS|ADMINS]], [[Special:Whatlinkshere/Template:NUMBEROFARTICLES|ARTICLES]], [[Special:Whatlinkshere/Template:NUMBEROFFILES|FILES]], [[Special:Whatlinkshere/Template:NUMBEROFPAGES|PAGES]], [[Special:Whatlinkshere/Template:NUMBEROFUSERS|USERS]].
:PAGESINNS [[Special:Whatlinkshere/Template:PAGESINNS:0|0]], [[Special:Whatlinkshere/Template:PAGESINNS:1|1]], [[Special:Whatlinkshere/Template:PAGESINNS:2|2]], [[Special:Whatlinkshere/Template:PAGESINNS:3|3]], [[Special:Whatlinkshere/Template:PAGESINNS:4|4]], [[Special:Whatlinkshere/Template:PAGESINNS:5|5]], [[Special:Whatlinkshere/Template:PAGESINNS:6|6]], [[Special:Whatlinkshere/Template:PAGESINNS:7|7]], [[Special:Whatlinkshere/Template:PAGESINNS:8|8]], [[Special:Whatlinkshere/Template:PAGESINNS:9|9]], [[Special:Whatlinkshere/Template:PAGESINNS:10|10]], [[Special:Whatlinkshere/Template:PAGESINNS:11|11]], [[Special:Whatlinkshere/Template:PAGESINNS:12|12]], [[Special:Whatlinkshere/Template:PAGESINNS:100|100]], [[Special:Whatlinkshere/Template:PAGESINNS:101|101]], [[Special:Whatlinkshere/Template:PAGESINNS:102|102]], [[Special:Whatlinkshere/Template:PAGESINNS:103|103]], etc.

==Examples of combinations==

;
<nowiki>{{fullurl:{{FULLPAGENAME}}|</nowiki>action=edit<nowiki>}}</nowiki>

:{{fullurl:{{FULLPAGENAME}}|action=edit}}
:{{fullurl:m:Special:Whatlinkshere|target={{FULLPAGENAME}}}}
;
<nowiki>[[{{NAMESPACE}} talk:{{PAGENAME}}]]</nowiki>

:[[{{NAMESPACE}} talk:{{PAGENAME}}]]
:
;
<nowiki>{{fullurl:{{NAMESPACE}} talk:{{PAGENAME}}}}</nowiki>

:{{fullurl:{{NAMESPACE}} talk:{{PAGENAME}}}}
:

The old form
<nowiki>{{SERVER}}{{localurl:</nowiki>
''page''
}}
is in essence the same as

<nowiki>{{fullurl:</nowiki>
''page''
}}
in recent ('''1.5+''') versions of the software.

In a template, for a link to a page which depends on a template parameter, the external link style is used even for internal links, to avoid that the system links to the edit page even if the page exists. To construct the external link, variables can also be useful.

==Variable in the form of a template call==
If the syntax of a template call with parameters is applied with the name of a variable, depending on the variable the parameters are either ignored or cause the variable to be interpreted as a (non-existing) template:

#Variables like {{NUMBEROFPAGES:R}} = {{NUMBEROFPAGES:R}} with a "raw" format are always handled as variable, {{NUMBEROFPAGES:R|Para|meter}} = {{NUMBEROFPAGES:R|Para|meter}}.
#Other variables like {{CURRENTDAYNAME}} = {{CURRENTDAYNAME}} are handled as template for given parameter(s), {{CURRENTDAYNAME|x}} = {{CURRENTDAYNAME|x}}.
#Parser functions like {{lc: Lower Case}} = {{lc: Lower Case}} ignore extraneous parameters, {{lc: Lower|Case}} = {{lc: Lower|Case}}.
#Parser function ns (e.g. {{ns: 1}} = {{ns: 1}}) gives an empty string for a non-applicable numerical parameter value, and evaluates a non-numerical parameter value as template, even if it has the name of a variable:
#:{{ns: 1234}} = {{ns: 1234}}
#:{{ns: t|abc}} = {{ns: t|abc}}
#:{{ns: CURRENTDAYNAME}} = {{ns: CURRENTDAYNAME}}.
#Parser functions like fullurl don't support the ../ notation, and in namespaces supporting subpages this has odd effects: like above, they evaluate such an invalid parameter value as template, see [[Link/a]] and [[Link/a/b]]. Here it just renders the wikitext:
#:{{fullurl:../a}} = {{fullurl:../a}}.
#: The cases #2, #4, and #5 resulting in template calls are probably related.
== Pre-Upgrade Tasks ==
* Read the UPGRADE file included within the package, in the mediawiki-[version number] directory of the .tar file.
* '''Download or backup''' your existing MediaWiki files
* '''Download or backup''' your database
* If you have modified any source files or stock templates, you will need to re-modify them. Make a note of what modifications you have installed each time you install them to make the process much easier. You can also use a program like [http://winmerge.sourceforge.net/ WinMerge], to compare old stock files with your custom files
* Determine what route you need to take by the version number, and allocate time accordingly. The [[MediaWiki_release_cycle#Version_numbers|version number]] is constructed as such: major.minor.patchlevel - example: 1.5.3 means major version 1, minor version 5 and patch level 3.

== Upgrading Tasks ==
=== Patch Version ===
''Example: from 1.5.'''2''' to 1.5.'''3'''''
# Extract all the files from the new MediaWiki package
# Upload or copy the files from the extracted folder to your desired destination folder
# Delete the /config/ directory
# ''Note: Your LocalSettings.php file will be preserved, and your wiki should operate without interruption''

If you are working on a Unix like system, you can untar the new MediaWiki package at some place, copy your old LocalSettings.php file into this directory and set a symbolic link to the directory.
If your webserver searches in directory ''/var/www'' for files to display and you have installed your wiki into directory ''/var/www/myFirstWiki'' the easiest way to upgrade from 1.5.2 to 1.5.3 is the following:
# cd /var/www
# mv myFirstWiki mediawiki-1.5.2
# tar xvzf mediawiki-1.5.3.tar.gz
# cp mediawiki-1.5.2/LocalSettings.php mediawiki-1.5.3
# ln -s mediawiki-1.5.3 myFirstWiki
You only have to check that the permissions - especially on file LocalSettings.php - have been set correct. If some problems occur you simply can go back to 1.5.2 by changing the symbolic link:
# rm myFirstWiki
# ln -s mediawiki-1.5.2 myFirstWiki
As long as the database layout is not changed, you know can switch between versions by setting the symbolic link.

=== Minor Version ===

''To upgrade to 1.'''6''', see http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Upgrading_to_1.6.''

''Example: from 1.'''4'''.x to 1.'''5'''.x''
# Extract all the files from the new MediaWiki package
# [[Lock the database|Lock your database]] to prevent editing, even if you have copied database you need to do this.
# Upload or copy the files from the extracted folder to your desired destination folder
# Rename your LocalSettings.php to LocalSettings.php.bak or similar
# CHMOD the /wiki/config/ folder and contents to 0777 (world writable)
## ''Recommended, but optional: Run the php maintenance/update.php program from the PHP CLI''
# Run the installer at yoursite.com/wiki/config/
## ''Note: You will need your existing database name, user name, password, and MediaWiki prefix''
# ''The installer will attempt to upgrade the database schema automatically''
# Copy the LocalSettings.php file from the /wiki/config/ folder to the /wiki/ folder
# Add any modifications to your new LocalSettings.php file from your old file, making sure to check the documentation for any changes to variable names
# Delete the /config/ directory
# ''Note: Your LocalSettings.php file will '''NOT''' be preserved. Expect your wiki to possibly have a downtime of a couple minutes

=== Major Version ===
''Example: from '''1'''.6.3 to '''2'''.0.1
# There has not been a significant major version release to date for upgrade

== Upgrade Tips ==

=== Database Backups with Shell Access ===
# Make a backup of your database with mysqldump (see [http://dev.mysql.com/doc/mysql/en/mysqldump.html mysqldump] for old versions, or for [http://mail.wikipedia.org/pipermail/wikitech-l/2004-November/026359.html MySQL 4.1.x])
# Use the command:
mysqldump -u wikiuser -p wikidb > wikiuser-wikidb-mediawiki-1.2.6-2004-06-23.sql

# Copy your mysql dump to a temporary file using: cp db.sql iso-db.sql.

=== Upgrade using PHPs CLI ===
# Upgrade the database schema (php -cli ./maintenance/update.php)

=== Broken Images ===
# Should be fixed upon saving the next edit of the page
# Alternatively, add your username/password to AdminSettings.php and run `php rebuildImages.php`
# Alternatively, postpend "?action=purge" to the url as it is most likely viewing a cached version of the page
# After upgrading to 1.6.x and all your images are broken, unable to generate thumbnails, or are completely black, you may need to set $wgHashedUploadDirectory = true; in your LocalSettings.php file which is by default false

=== Upgrading to utf-8 Before Upgrading to 1.5.x ===
''Note - This is an interpretation'': Upgrading to MediaWiki 1.5.x requires a database change to utf-8 formatting. This means that characters with accents like é cannot be used for various things.

# use upgrade1_5.php from /maintenance subdir, from commandline. You must create the AdminSettings.php (from AdminSettings.sample. Also make sure that $wgUseLatin1 = true is set in LocalSettings.php at least while running upgrade1_5.php)

'''OR'''

# From the command line use iconv:
iconv -f iso-8859-1 -t utf-8 iso-db.sql > utf8-db.sql

# This utf8-db.sql is database to use in the 1.5.2 upgrade. Load the database into mysql with: mysql -pmysqlpass upgradabledb < utf8-db.sql. Change your $wgDBname to upgradabledb (in LocalSettings.php)

* You might want to also truncate the Recent Changes table to clear corrupt rows.
* You might also want to use the rebuildImages script, or re-upload the images

'''OR'''

use MySQL

mysqldump --user=***** --password=***** --default-character-set=latin1 --skip-set-charset wikidb > dump.sql
mysql --user=***** --password=***** --execute="DROP DATABASE wikidb; CREATE DATABASE wikidb CHARACTER SET utf8 COLLATE utf8_general_ci;"
mysql --user=***** --password=***** --default-character-set=utf8 wikidb < dump.sql

==== 1.4beta6 to 1.6.3 ====

With a copy of the LocalSettings.php and a copy of the database.

In LocalSettings.php

* Change the $IP, $wgScriptPath, $wgDBname to point to the copy.
* Add the $wgReadOnlyFile = "";

Then

* Run on php CLI ''php maintenance/upgrade1_5.php'' then ''php maintenance/update.php''

The scripts take the console user to connect to the database so I gave that user full access to the
MySQL database.

==== 1.4beta5 to 1.5.2 ====

The upgrade fails when directly installing the 1.5.2 version over the 1.4beta5. The solution for me was a two step upgrade:
* upgrade from 1.4beta5 to 1.4.10
* upgrade from 1.4.10 to 1.5.2
Note that the new tables are created as InnoDB tables, which should be activated in the MySQL configuration. Otherwise, the second step will fail.

==== 1.2.x to 1.3.x ====

* MediaWiki: entries that are not used by the software will be automatically moved to Template: entries at upgrade time
* Pick the correct character encoding -- some languages were only available in Latin-1 on 1.2.x and are now available for Unicode as well. If you want to upgrade an existing wiki from Latin-1 to Unicode you'll have to dump the database to SQL, run it through iconv or another conversion tool, and restore it

Example: [[upgrade from 1.2 to 1.3]]

==== 1.1.x or earlier to 1.2.x ====

You need to specify the *admin* database username and password to the installer in order for it to successfully upgrade the database structure. You may wish to manually change the GRANTs later.

:''If you have a '''very''' old database, you may need to manually run some of the update scripts from maintenance/archives to get up to circa November 2003 levels before the automatic updater works.''

==== UseModWiki or old "phase 2" Wikipedia code ====
* You can try using the conversion script called "importUseModWiki.php" in the maintenance folder
** ''Note: This script is unmaintained. It may require tweaking and customization on a per-installation basis. Use at your own risk.''

How to use:
# Install the original MediaWiki
# Call the conversion script
# SQL statements will be output
# Copy these statements to a file and then run that using mysql
# Rebuild the links tables etc. after importing
Below the edit box is a '''Show preview''' button. Pressing this will show you what the article will look like without actually saving it. It is strongly recommended that you use this prior to saving. This allows you to check what the page will look like first and to check that you haven't made any errors. It also prevents the need for multiple saves. Saving the same article a large number of times in quick succession makes it harder for people to check what changed, and clogs up the [[Help:Page history|page history]].

It is helpful, however, to save the page before moving, breaking apart, or combining sections of the article, if you have been making small edits to the article. The difference display is not good at showing paragraph moves, and will not display the small edits clearly if sections are then moved around.

Saving only once is also a way of avoiding [[Help:Edit conflict|edit conflict]]s, as people will not see the article on [[Help:Recent changes|recent changes]], and therefore they are less likely to try editing it at the same time as you.

If you are [[Help:Logging in|logged in]], you can set your [[Special:Preferences|preferences]] to show the preview before the edit box instead of after it. If you select this option, the preview will be displayed above the edit box when you click the "Show preview" button while editing a page. See [[Help:Preferences]].

In the case of [[Help:Editing shortcuts|automatic conversion of wikitext]] the preview shows the rendering, while the button "show changes" shows the new wikitext.

Using show preview also prevents your login timing out, which would mean your edits would not be attributed to your user name. Clicking preview regularly will restart the timer, so you remain logged in. Also, if you are no longer logged in, showing a preview will make you aware of this so you can log in and save your work after that. You can check this by seeing if your user name appears in the upper-right corner when you press preview. If you are not logged in, open [[Special:Userlogin]] in a separate window (right-click "Log in" and hit "Open link in new window" or similar). Log in, then go back to your editing and hit "preview" again to make sure all is well. Note that this will clear the minor edit and watch checkboxes, so make sure they're set appropriately again before you finally save the page.

When utilizing this feature during a major edit, consider copying the content into your [[w:clipboard|clipboard]]. On extremely rare occasions, the Wikipedia servers have hiccups, and you could lose your work.

Typically, the noinclude-part of a template page contains examples including or [[Help:substitution|substituting]] the template. Changes in the working of the template (i.e. changes outside the noinclude-part) are not yet effective in these examples in preview and, in the case of [[Help:substitution|substitution]], in "show changes".

When pressing "preview", also a preview of the edit summary is obtained; thus e.g. links can be checked.

There are two types of '''talk pages''' - standard talk pages are used to discuss an article, whilst user talk pages are used to communicate with other users or leave them messages. Every page has an associated talk page, except pages in the ''Special:'' [[Help:namespace|namespace]]. If there is no discussion of a page, the link to its talk page will be red. You can still discuss the page - you will just be the first person to do so.

==Accessing a talk page==
To access a talk page look for a link labelled ''Talk'', ''Discussion'' or ''Discuss this page''. These links will be found either at the top of the page or on the left hand side (near ''Edit this page'').

A talk page adds ''Talk:'' to the beginning of the main page's title. If the main page has a prefix then talk is added after this prefix. For example, a talk page associated with the main article namespace simply has the prefix ''Talk:'', while a talk page associated with the user namespace has the prefix ''User talk:''. This article is in the ''Help:'' namespace, so the talk page for this article is [[Help talk:Talk page]]. The [[Main Page]] is in the main namespace (because it has no prefix), so its talk page is simply [[Talk:Main Page]].

After someone else edits your user talk page, the alert "You have new messages" is automatically displayed on all pages you view, until you view your user page.

==Using talk pages==
You should sign your contributions by typing three or four tildes <nowiki>(~~~ = Username)</nowiki>

<nowiki>(~~~~ = Username 19:36, 10 January 2006 (UTC))</nowiki>. See [[Help:Automatic conversion of wikitext]].

On a talk page, "this page" usually refers to the main page (i.e. the page the talk page is associated with). If the talk page itself is referred to, write "this talk page".

When debating the name of the page or discussing merging it with another page, always mention the current page name. Otherwise after [[help:renaming (moving) a page|renaming (moving) a page]], references to "this page name" become ambiguous.

The "Post a comment" feature allows you to start a new [[Help:section|section]] without needing to edit the whole page. The section header becomes the [[Help:edit summary|edit summary]] when you save the page, so it only needs to be typed once.

The practice of "spamming" - posting similar messages to more than a few users' talk pages, often for the purpose of soliciting a certain action - is discouraged.

====Formatting====
Because the [[wiki]] software platform provides for a wide range of formatting styles, proper or at least consistent formatting is essential to maintaining readable talk pages.

The reference of a comment is determined by the number of colons (':') in front of it. If a reply is made to a statement, one adds a colon to the number of colons used in the statement being replied to. This style of conversation is easy to read.

Example:
{| border="1" cellpadding="6" cellspacing="0"
|
<nowiki>How's the soup? --[[Bob]]</nowiki>

<nowiki>:It's great!! --[[Lisa]]</nowiki>

<nowiki>::Not too bad.. --[[George]]</nowiki>

<nowiki>:::I made it myself! --[[Bob]]</nowiki>

<nowiki>I think the soup-discussion should be moved to [[Talk:Soup]].. --[[Lisa]]</nowiki>

<nowiki>:I tend to disagree. --[[George]]</nowiki>

|}

The above will produce this:
{| border="1" cellpadding="6" cellspacing="0"
|
How's the soup? --[[Bob]]

:It's great!! --[[Lisa]]

::Not too bad.. --[[George]]

:::I made it myself! --[[Bob]]

I think the soup-discussion should be moved to [[Talk:Soup]].. --[[Lisa]]

:I tend to disagree. --[[George]]

|}
